BLOCK NUMBER: 9400

DATE: 1/14/12 (Saturday) TIME: Between 12:00pm-2:00pm

DESCRIPTION: The victim was a 10 year old juvenile riding her bicycle with another juvenile female. The two were approached by the suspect who was in his car in the 9400 block of Daly Drive. The suspect asked the girls to come on over to his car. The girls refused and the vehicle drove away only to return two other times. The suspect never got out of his car. The victim’s parents reported the event only after they heard of a similar incident that had happened a few weeks ago.

SUSPECT INFORMATION: White male in his 30’s with dark brown hair and a brown goatee.

VEHICLE INFORMATION: Newer silver colored four door vehicle

Rain in North Texas

Raain In North Texas

Wow! It's hard to believe but it's raining in North Texas. With Stage Four Water Restrictions looming, this is a welcome sight.

Last year's drought left our lakes and reservoirs dangerously low. People living on Cedar Creek Lake and many of the local lakes could not get their boats in the water. A positive side was that it was a good time to do any repairs or maintenance on their retaining walls.

While low lakes may seem like an inconvenience, there's a much larger implication for those of us living here. Those lakes and reservoirs are also the source of our drinking water. When the levels are low, cities begin the various stages of water restrictions in an effort to insure we have water to drink.

The droughts also have an impact on our homes. The vast majority of our foundations are slab foundations. These foundations are sensitive to changes in the water content in our expansive soils. Last year we saw a dramatic rise in homes with foundation issues due to the drought. This cost north Texas homeowners millions of dollars.

Halloween in Ridgeview Ranch

As usual my neighbors in Ridgeview Ranch go all-out for Halloween. It's like living the Griswald Family Christmas at Halloween. That said, they do a great job and the neighborhood children love to come on our little cul-de-sac.

I recently purchased a 35mm low-light prime lens for my Nikon and thought a little night shooting would be a good test. All three photos were shot handheld without flash at F1.8. Click on the images for higher resolution versions.

Coyotes in Ridgeview Ranch Plano TX

Coyote

Sightings of coyotes and bobcats are quite common in Ridgeview Ranch. A sighting of a healthy coyote/bobcat does not constitute a threat to people and as long as their behavior is apparently normal, there is no reason for an Animal Services Officer to respond. Contrary to what many believe, these animals do not live only in rural environments. Many have adapted to survive in urban settings and there are coyotes in nearly every major city across the United States. In fact, there is a coyote pack that has been extensively studied for years that live in downtown Chicago.

These small predators may appear to be a threat but in reality they pose very little danger to people. In recorded history, there has never been a reported attack on a person by a bobcat or coyote in Plano. Throughout the entire state of Texas, there has never been an instance of a coyote or bobcat killing a person. By comparison, domesticated dogs and cats injure more than 600 people each year in Plano alone, and dogs are responsible for an average of over one death per year in Texas. If you have a coyote sighting in your neighborhood:

Do:
• Do keep small dogs and cats inside at night.
• Do keep the covers secured on your trash receptacles.
• Do keep your dog and cat on a leash (as required by city ordinance).
• Do report the coyote/bobcat sighting to the DFW Wildlife Coalition (972-234-9453).
• Do try to consider that they were here first.

Don’t:
• Do not feed your pets on the back porch.
• Do not walk your small dog in wooded areas.
• Do not approach, chase, make noises at, chunk rocks or otherwise taunt a wandering coyote.
• Do not approach a coyote if it appears trapped, injured, or sick. Contact Animal Services immediately at (972) 769-4360.
• Do not ever try to touch a coyote.

Homeowners actually benefit from the presence of coyotes and bobcats because their predation keeps the populations of rabbit, rats, and mice under control and prevents infestations that occur in homes and businesses when vermin reproduce unchecked.

Ridgeview Ranch Splash Day

For the fourth year, Gina and I sponsored the Ridgeview Ranch Splash Day. Hosted at the Bellerive Pool, the annual event was attended by over 200 homeowners and their families. In addition to food and drinks, there was a huge waterslide, a DJ, games, and lots of prizes.

Splash Day is one of many social activities hosted by the Ridgeview Ranch Homeowners Association. Located in North Plano, Ridgeview Ranch offers golf course living in four distinct sections.

The amount of wildlife in Ridgeview Ranch never ceases to amaze me. I guess it’s the benefit of living adjacent to the golf course. Rabbits are abundant and we even see coyotes several times a year.

Spring Comes to North Texas

I love this time of year in North Texas. The temperatures are mild—crisp in the mornings and warm in the afternoons. As March begins so does Spring. I was reminded this morning when I was outside drinking my coffee and watching the dogs run around the yard looking for bunnies to chase.

Spring Comes to North Texas

As I sipped my coffee, I noted the Bradford Pear trees were just getting ready to bloom. As I took a closer look, I noted a few early blooms glistening in the early morning sun. It was a peaceful moment taking it all in…the smell of the coffee, the sun kissing the blooms, the birds singing.

While I knew that moment would give way to the hustle and bustle of another busy day, I had to sit there and savor the moment. I learned this lesson the hard way as I watched my spouse battle cancer. She survived and both of us look at life differently.

Time is a finite resource. Take a few moments out of your day to look at the beauty around you.

Winter Storm Blasts Ridgeview Ranch Plano TX

As the old saying goes, “If you don’t like the weather in Texas, just wait 10 minutes!”

The Dallas area was pounded with thunderstorms, freezing rain, sleet, snow, and blustery winds – all in a matter of hours Tuesday morning. The spring-like 77 degrees we enjoyed on Sunday has given way to temperatures in the teens and a wind chill near zero. Temperatures are expected to reach a 15-year low of 10 degrees, keeping the Metroplex in the deepfreeze through Friday afternoon.

Given the icy road conditions, most area schools and businesses are closed today. The kids in north Plano’s Ridgeview Ranch neighborhood enjoyed the day out of the classroom. Bundled up with sleds in hand, the icy street was their playground today.
