It's that time of the year again...time to update the copyright notices on your websites and blogs.

I used to do this manually but a couple of years ago I automated it using a simple script and some HTML. All my sites show a notice similar to this,"Copyright 2006 - 2011 The Branch Team..." The simple script below will update the "second year" in te notice to keep it current.
Start Code
<script type="text/javascript" language="JavaScript">
<!--//Script created by Ronny Drappier, http://sipreal.com
//Visit http://javascriptkit.com for this script
today=new Date();
y0=today.getFullYear();
// end hiding --->
</script>
<font color="#ffffff" size="1"> Copyright ©
2006 -
<script type="text/javascript" language="JavaScript">
<!--- Hide from old browsers
document.write(y0);
// end hiding --->
</script>
The Branch Team...
End Code
It's really not that hard to follow. The script pulls the current year in the first section of the code, the second section sets up the copyright notice, the third section of code inserts the current year into the notice, and the fourth section finishes up the notice.
If you don't want to automate, remember to go update your copyright notices.

Thanks for this alert/tip...appreciated!
Note this will not work on ActiveRain. I don't think you can use Java Scripts.

Thanks so much. This is something I had not gotten around to doing, so this is a timely reminder for me.
You're so conciencious. I don't update the dates. In fact I publish only the year the content was published.

The copyright law no longer requires any notice. Fact is, if someone is going to steal your content, they'll ignore that notice anyway.
See Copyright.gov.
Notice was required under the 1976 Copyright Act. This
requirement was eliminated when the United States adhered
to the Berne Convention, effective March 1, 1989.
Tom, thanks. Good to know. Best wishes for an awesome year in 2011.
Lenn,
I agree with you on the law. The notice is simply to discourage the theft of the materials. I figure it keeps some people honest...
Tom
Shame there isn't a plugin but this will work so thanks.
Corinne,
I have it as a separate PHP file that I call into my websites. Much of my website design is compartmented these days as it makes it so much easier to update.

Tom - Thanks for the tip on changing copyright dates. It can sure come in handy on a day like today as I am updating all my websites by midnight. However, I think for singularly published works that I do, I am just going to start leaving the copyright date static.
Plagiarists may steal a blog or two of mine. But they can't fill up a room of 130 Realtors and teach short sales like I do. They can't make kitchen table short sale presentations with distressed sellers like I can. They can't get testimonials from thrilled clients like I do. Plagiarists can't answer questions outside of the material they poached.
Tom - An elegant programming solution. However, it won't work in situations where the user's browser does not recognize Javascript or has Javascript turned off.
Marc,
That is correct. I suspect that most modern browsers support JavaScript.
It's hard to develop anything to cover 100 percent of them so you program for the highest common denominator. I test all my websites to make sure they support IE, Firefox, and Safari. In 2010 those three browsers were 95.3% of my 11k unique visiters. The other 5 percent were Google Chrome, Mozilla, and unknown.
Tom
Thanks for the reminder! *updates website*
Happy New Year, Tom! I saw you and Gina at RainCamp Houston, but unfortunately, I didn't get to say hello. It seemed as if each time I was free, you were engaged in conversation... and vice versa. But it was good to see a familiar face!
David,
Sorry we missed each other. If Raincamp comes back to Texas we might go again just to catch up with people...
Happy New Year to you.
Tom
